I had many books as a kid and enjoyed seeing them again when clearing out my dad’s house after he died. My mom enrolled me in a Children’s book club because she wanted me to like reading and encouraged me to enjoy books. I had a green bookcase, built by dad of course, filled with books but when asked what I would like read I would choose the snake section in The Book of Knowledge. I liked snakes back then but more than that I loved seeing my parents cringe when I’d ask them to read about the different snakes. Although it wasn’t really a children’s book, it certainly was the one my parents hated reading to me the most!
Even today I find snakes fascinating to watch at the zoo when they’re on the go. This is a picture of a Python that I took while curled up on top of a fake elephant's head. I wouldn’t want one in my house though.
Is there something your child likes that makes you cringe? What book do you remember your parents reading to you?

My grandma is deathly afraid of snakes and wouldn't read us books about them either!
I would cringe if I was asked to read a book about snakes!! This reminds me of the horrible two week period when my son was into bugs and we read bug books all the time. I always felt itchy!
I don't recall anyone ever reading to me about anything, no one ever had time, but I remember looking at pictures and making up my own stories.
Your green bookcase sounds wonderful! I love it! I love all of your memories. Memories are very special, aren't they?
I LOVE snakes. I have 3 Ball Pythons and my boyfriend has a Mexican Black Kingsnake. We plan to breed the pythons when they get old enough. I can't wait to have baby snakes!!
Thank you for stopping by my site:) My kids love Crickets!!! I hate them they like to try and catch them and give them names, like Bob or Pete. They love to show Mommy because Mommy freaks out!!!
I'm lucky. Most of the books my kids like, I like. Thanks to them, I'm becoming quite the Star Wars expert. Awesome!
Thanks for stopping by my place the other day (via Mama Kat). I know my parents read to me, but cannot remember what the he k they read. I have a few nursery rhyme books from my childhood, but nothing I didn't like. As a parent myself, I am over barney and Calliou for the little one and although I like Star Wars, do not enjoy reading them to the big kiddo.
