How Do You Read The Newspaper?

One of Harry's pet peeves was the newspaper's layout and bulkiness. He didn't like how you always have to go to another page to read the rest of an article. Kind of like how I don't like clicking on "read more" to read an entire blog post. The pages are very big and it is very cumbersome to read, especially when you need to use a magnifying glass like Harry did.

His solution was to simply tear the paper apart first. This made it easier to manipulate and hold. No awkward folding was necessary then and he could easily hold the page he was reading with one hand while using the magnifying glass with the other. I always thought it funny that he tore his paper apart, but it did make sense when you think about it.

Does anyone else do this? If you need a magnifying glass to read the paper, you may want to give this a try.

it's been so long since I read a newspaper...but if I remember correctly I would always read the front page first...picking out what was important to me and following the rest of the article to whatever page it was found on. Next I would hit the obits and the comic strip. That was about it. I never tore the newspaper apart...just lots of flipping and turning...lol

I've never seen that done, but it does make sense. I actually love reading the paper myself. I love flipping through it - back and forth reading. I'm not sure why; even as I type this it sounds like it should be annoying!

My grandfather used to do this too. I thought it was really fully as a kid but now I understand why.

Stopping by from SITS to say hello.

What a good idea. Newspapers have got smaller and smaller so that they are easier to hold these days - at least over here in Europe.

I actually no longer read the paper - we got fed up with our local Toledo Blade and cancelled our subscription years ago, but I can see Harry's point - his way sounds like a good idea.

Hi Karen, thanks for visiting my blog!

I don't know anyone who does it like Harry, but my husband drives me crazy with the paper! He usually sits down to breakfast before I do and when I sit down he has the whole paper in his hands. I always say to him, "Want to share any of that?". Every stinkin' day! Why can't he just separate it into sections and take one, only one, I don't care WHICH one, but JUST one at a time! There! I feel much better now!

I don't tear mine apart, but I do organize it before I read and usually fold the page down to a more manageable size (especially on longer articles-otherwise my arms get tired holding it up!) I think that I will try this with my daughter, though, she likes to read some articles (okay-I make her read some articles!) and this would make it much easier for her...thanks for the tip!
