What Makes You Mad, And What Are You Going To Do About It? (Writer’s Workshop)

The short answer is spam on my blog by Anonymous makes me mad.  I’m going to change the comments to not allow anonymous ones anymore.  That’s what I’m going to do about it besides confronting Anonymous here.

The long answer is:

Anonymous is my top commenter.

I don’t know why but someone must hate me.  EVERY SINGLE DAY I get spam comments from Anonymous on this blog.  Actually, I don’t think they are all from the same person because they vary.  Yes, I admit it.  This makes me mad.  Even though my comments are moderated, Anonymous still spams me every day on old posts that don’t even remotely relate to the comment.  It’s not as though they actually get on the blog.

I don’t know if this person likes wasting their time doing this or has devised some way to have it done automatically.  I do not like taking the time to have to mark it as spam and delete them every day.  My time is very precious to me and I like to be productive and use it effectively.  Some comments aren’t even in English so I have no idea what they even say.

Here is a sampling of the typical spam comments I receive:

crystal items zeal pretentious any confine, condo, commission, yacht, pile, motel entrance-hall or barter center with their middling elegance.
All the designs are as respected, as they are beautiful.

Some SEO marketing comment.

This was helpful to my research.

Hiya everyone, awsome board I find It extremely useful & it's helped me out alot
I hope to be able to contribute and guide other users like this message board has helped me

[Duh, THIS IS NOT A MESSAGE BOARD, HELLO  Spell much?!]

But yesterday I received this line repeated about 15 times in the same comment.

DIE! DIE! DIE! DIE! DIE! DIE! DIE! DIE! DIE! DIE! DIE! DIE! DIE! DIE! sucker

What do you make of this, should I be scared?  This was the first time I ever got one like this but that does it.  I am changing my comment setting to not allow any anonymous comments.  I’m sorry if that is an inconvenience to anyone wishing to leave a legitimate comment; however, I’ve had enough!  Why would anyone leave a nasty comment like that?  This blog certainly is not offensive in any way that I am aware of.  Here is my advice to anonymous that doesn’t like me:  If you don’t like a certain blog or a certain blogger, don’t visit it!  Is that so hard?

Are you a spammer?
If so, you are wasting your time as well as annoying people.  Why do you do it?  I’d really like to know!  C’mon you coward whoever you are, fess up and leave your name and contact information.  I’d like an explanation.

What sort of spam do you get on your blog?

This post is in response to the prompt, “What gets you mad and what are you going to do about it?”  Share in the comments what gets you mad or write about it on your blog and link up to Mama Kat’s Writer’s Workshop.  Check out the other prompts too!

OH MY GOSH this post made me totally laugh out loud. I mean, I'm so sorry you're receiving so much spam but I'm glad you shared it! It's a funny story.

Some ways spammers get your email and/or blog address is when you leave it other places in comments. Sometimes that can't be helped, but if you have to leave your email address, for example, do it this way: tx{dot}mama{dot}4{at}gmail{dot}com

Good Luck getting rid of the spammers!!

Oh, another way to avoid it is to turn on word verification!

Since Blogger changed how they handle Spam, most of those annoying Anonymous comments show up on the Spam tab - and lickety split, I delete them!

I moderate comments, so I just delete the ones that are obviously attempts to spam me.

Well I'm not Anonymous... what kind of name is that to give a child anyway??? LOL!

Seriously, some people are very unhappy so they want every one else in the world to be so too.

I feel sorry for Anonymous.
And my blog won't accept Anonymous so I don't have to worry about retaliation hate spam! :)

thanks for the wonderfully nice comment on my blog today.

You are appreciated.

Karen,
Not sure about blogger anymore but even when I had word verification on, anonymous comments came through and I blocked them. I LOVE WordPress. Haven't had any spam since using them cause they catch it all. Most spam comments are to put backlinks in your blog.
As to the one that says die repeatedly, you should be able to see the ip address it came from and I'd report it. That is scary and I've never heard of someone doing that before. If you can't find the IP address, then still report it to blogger. No one should do that ever.

That's insane. I used to receive stuff like that too and then I changed my settings to moderate the comments. After a while, they stopped and I turned off the moderation.

Texan Mama: Glad you found this funny. thanks for the tips! Maybe I'll try that word verification instead.

June: It's still annoying though.

Dawn: I do try to leave nice comments when I visit others. Thanks for yours here!

Mountain Woman: I have no clue how to find the ip address that nasty one came from and wouldn't know how to report it anyway.

Angie: I wish my spammers would stop already!

Wish I could offer some good advice. I think those who are spamming you may be starving for attention. Or totally inconsiderate; take your pick. Mostly, I've found that the messages that aren't in English usually carry links that are uncouth. Good luck with your new approach.

There is nothing better than a fun dad. I had one my grandpa was one and my husbands one is slowly becoming one, when he isn't honery. so we have our moments. "But I figure at 84 you deserve a right to be a little honery if you want. I do have to admit there is someting about the elderley that makes them cuter than when they were young.

I had to start moderating my comments because someone kept spamming me. They seemed to have stopped.

I am a new follower on Twitter and Networked Blogs from Friday Follow Over 40. Would appreciate it if you could stop by and follow back.

I am giving a Mrs Santa Claus apron away to one of my followers on December 5.

Karen,
Those were crazy messages you received. Spam gets my furious, too. I delete them as I find them. Here are 2 links that may help you. They're both related to spam on Blogger blogs.

I get the same ones..

"This will be useful for my classwork."

"Excellent. Very useful."

grrrr I can't disallow Anonymous comments, because every time I do, my cousin gets bummed out, because that's how she comments. Maybe I'll show her how to open a google account! :)

Wow! I've never gotten the "die" spam before. That's pretty intense. I get the "this was helpful to me" comments all the time. They are always painfully obvious that they are spam.
